-I don’t know who needs to hear this, but…
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but the more emotional you get when discussing a topic, the less you understand it.
If talking politics makes your face start turning red and smoke start rolling out of your ears, then chances are you don’t have a clue what you are talking about.
When I was in college, I often times threw my algebra book across the room in frustration because I couldn’t understand it...but I could rattle off the capital of every American state with no hesitation or emotion whatsoever.
That triggered feeling you get when you are talking politics (or about anything else) with others and you don’t like what they are saying, that feeling comes from EGO. God forbid someone knows more than you, right?
You know deep down that you SHOULD know a little more about what is going on in the world, but YOU DON’T...so instead of being agreeable, rational, and open minded, you start to freak out on people (especially if they are more educated than you) because your ego is threatened...you’d rather shutdown and go into “fight or flight” mode than be proven wrong. The desire to listen and learn is not even in the equation.
Maybe take a break from engaging in conversations/arguments, and start engaging in some reading, contemplation, and careful consideration.
Better to have your face in a book than in someone else’s business...
